Admissions - Ph.D. in Public Health

Admission to the doctoral program is competitive and students will be selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to public health, academic preparation and ability.

Admission Criteria

In order to apply to the doctoral program, students must meet the following requirements:

  • A demonstrated commitment to public health, either through education, work or volunteer experience.
  • Completion of graduate courses in at least three of the five core areas of public health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Occupational/Environmental Health, Behavioral Sciences, and Health Services Administration).  Accepted students who are deficient in one or two areas must take the necessary course(s) either before admission or upon matriculation in the doctoral program.  Credits earned in these core courses will not count toward the 45 credit degree requirement.
  • Applicants are expected to have a strong statistical background and demonstrated research experience, as evidenced by a thesis-based master’s degree, authored publications or a description of research activities in their personal statement.
  • An earned baccalaureate degree.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all courses of record.  Alternatively, a student may present a grade point average greater than 3.0 for the last two years of graduate study coupled with other evidence of competence and accomplishment.
  • Although not required, a master’s degree is highly preferred.  Students may be admitted without a master’s degree, but must demonstrate a commitment to public health either through exceptional undergraduate preparation, completion of graduate courses in at least three of the five core areas of public health, or have extensive professional experience in the field of public health.

Graduate Assistantships

Doctoral students will be matched with an academic advisor upon entering the program.  This match will be established either through previous work experience with this advisor, or through demonstrated academic experience in the advisor’s field of work.  Academic advisors will assist students in garnering financial support through graduate assistantships and/or external funding. Current graduate assistantships available
