The Youth Health Service Corps is a health careers recruitment program for diverse high school students that engages “student leaders” in
service learning projects addressing community health care needs.
Youth Health Service Corps Curriculum:
- Module 1 Leadership & Service Learning
- Module 2 Student Website Training
- Module 3 Vulnerable Populations/Cultural Competency
- Module 4 Ethical & Legal Issues / Confidentiality Module 5 Health Career Exploration
- Module 6 Health Care Skills
- Students also complete CPR Certification
Service Learning Projects
Student leaders complete semester long projects where they:
- Investigate community health issues
- Plan a service action to address a community health issue
- Act by implementing service
- Reflect on service
- Demonstrate or share results of service with peers and stakeholders
- Celebrate success
YHSC National Expansion:
60 AHEC in 22 states participate in the YHSC program including: Alaska, Connecticut, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont,
Virginia Washington and Wisconsin.

- 2,627 high school student performed an average of 19 volunteer hours per student
- 79,372 total hours of service performed in community health care settings
- 200 volunteer sites participating
